The environmental impact of artificial lighting is quite serious. It goes well beyond light pollution and disposal. Here are a few statistics to show you how something so small can be such a big deal:

The average commercial building uses 37%-50% of its energy demand on lighting. By switching to LED lighting this can be decreased by 50%.

About one billion fluorescent lamps are thrown away each year globally. This equates to 50,000 pounds of mercury. Even if the greater majority is properly disposed of, it only takes 4mg to poison 7,000 gallons of water, which equals every gallon in the US and Canada.

If a quarter of the current fluorescent lighting were to be replaced in the United States, we could eliminate the equivalent of 10 million cars in green house gasses, save approximately 15 billion dollars in yearly electrical costs, and could demolish 133 out dated coal burning power plants. In addition, carbon pollution could be reduced by 158 metric tons, avoiding the release of 5,700 lbs of airborne mercury.
